The Siren

Comfy, Cozy Fall Reading

Like most readers, The Siren loves seasonal reads. With the Autumnal Equinox closing the door on a sweltering summer and ushering in a calm and vibrant fall, I know many seek comfort and joy in our books.

As the warmth dissipates, the leaves change and fall, and days of chilly rain encourage us to relax in our favorite spot with our favorite blanket, warm drinks, and, of course, warm characters.

This fall, The Siren will highlight books that bring about seasonal comfort, fun, and, of course, joy. Enjoy cozy reads these next few weeks. In October, we’ll explore various levels of horror and folklore, highlighting the authors who conjure that horror. And, you guessed it, essays on these topics.

Grab your favorite sweatshirt and blanket, and let’s chat about cozy reads! Check out these authors and books, which dare you to slow down and take time for yourself.

Nostalgic Reads

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug and an incredibly potent one if you’re looking for a literary hug. These hold a special place in my heart and always comfort me. They’re quick reads that will have you saying, “Man, I always loved these.”

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

Anne is an 11-year-old orphan (not off to a great start, stick with me) who is sent to live with middle-aged siblings on Prince Edward Island, Canada. Anne is a talkative, bright dreamer with a flair for melodrama, especially after never having a stable home. The description of the scenery, the hopefulness, and the line, “I am so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers,” will have Anne's beautiful outlook stealing your heart, too.

I’m biased, but this book left a lasting impression on me. I absolutely love this book to this day. Two Connecticut children hop on a train to New York City to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where hijinx, cleverness, and the heartfelt, wholesome vision of solving a mystery is done so by two fairly brave children. It also made me want to live in a museum. I dare you not to smile while reading this one.

Cozy Witchy

We love witchy here; can you blame us? Stories about people, how they love and live, with dashes of magic. Enjoy these cozy books that will make you feel warm and believe in it all.

Deja Brew by Celestine Martin; coming Oct. 1!

Wishes gone wrong! Second chances at love! Former reality stars! This third installment in Celestine’s Elemental Love Series hits shelves this October. All three books take place in the mystical Jersey Shore Town Freya Grove. (We love Jersey!) Sirena Caraway’s powers are on the fritz, and this ex-celebrity chef needs inspiration and a career-saving job. Enter Gus, a former reality star who needs a bit of reputation saving. Enter a mysterious cookbook, and a crush and magical adventure (and love!) ensues. We can’t wait for this read!

Pre-order Deja Brew today! Print | Audiobook

Read the other two in the series:

Witchful Thinking: Print | Audiobook

Kiss and Spell: Print | Audiobook

Cheeky English humor, a gorgeous bad billionaire, a competition? This book had me hooked. The cheeky familiars that populate this cozy,

fantastical world are equally lovable, charming, and wonderful new friends. Can our Main Witch save her family’s potion shop in Charming Cove? Will the sexy bad boy billionaire win? Guess you’ll have to find out and kick off the series with the Modern Girl’s Guide to Magic.

More Cozy

Here are a few more delicious, cozy reads I have to share. I hope you love them!

The Next Always by Nora Roberts

I’m in a series type of mood today. The iconic Boonsboro Inn series kicks off with The Next Always, a sweet, lovely read that feels Hallmark-y and easy all at once. I read all three books during a snowstorm one year and will likely jump back in this season.

A historic inn in Boonsboro, Maryland, needs some TLC, and the Montgomery brothers are the right crew to do so. Beckett, the oldest, is the lead of the project and is determined not to get distracted—that is until his childhood dream girl is back in town after a massive life change. Small-town romance and dreamy inn settings will capture and transport you.

Built to Last by Erin Hahn

Former child star Shelby Springfield moved home to Michigan to escape the pain of her ex-costar love triangle and the life that was child acting. She now builds furniture and flips homes comfortably in her new life. Things change quickly when those co-stars come rushing back into her life with a new house-flipping reality show that absolutely flips her world. I’m slightly obsessed with this one, and there’s a sequel! Cozy, the Upper Penninsula, romance, it’s a fun one.

Fear not, Friends of the Siren, more cozy recommendations are on the docket for next week. We suggest scheduling a Book Divination reading if you’d like a personalized book recommendation list!
