Book Tarot Reading: Evelyn Hugo

Welcome to Book Tarot Reading, where The Siren chooses a book character and completes a tarot reading for them.

These readings are meant to be fun despite using classic tarot reading skills and intuition. Occasionally, these readings resonate. If so, take what makes the most sense and leave the rest. With messages working from the universe, it's great to practice discernment. Did it feel like it was for you? You likely needed to hear all or parts of it. If not, hopefully, you learned something and enjoyed this exercise.

Enjoy!

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo: A Tarot Reading

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid chronicles the salacious and heartbreaking romantic life of former Hollywood darling Evelyn Hugo. Her acting career wasn’t nearly as famous as her love life. Evelyn is daring, sexy, and forward. What Evelyn wants, she adeptly receives. She has never denied herself anything she’s wanted, or has she?

Monique is not in the most comfortable place in her life. Her husband left, and her professional career is stagnant. Life is definitely not going to plan. To her delight and surprise, the legend, Evelyn Hugo, has hand-selected Monique to tell the truth about her salacious life—the absolute truth.

Starting in Los Angeles in the 1950s, the story winds through Evelyn’s glamorous life as a famous actress, revealing the truth of her experience and the pain she endured from it to leaving acting in the 1980s and We Talk About the Husband. In her final act, Evelyn Hugo shines a light on her truth and the true love of her life.

”And I didn't say I was confessing any sins. To say that what I have to tell is a sin is misleading and hurtful. I don't feel regret for the things I've done – at least, not the things you might expect – despite how hard they may have been or how repugnant they may seem in the cold light of day.”

This book was impossible to put down! We highly recommend this frothy, heartfelt, poignant, funny, and deeply entertaining read.

Spoiler alerts: In this next part, The Siren pulled a tarot spread based on Evelyn Hugo, which contains spoilers for the book. Read ahead at your own risk!

The Tarot Spread

For Evelyn Hugo's reading, I took a breath to focus on the energy of the book and the cards, recalling Evelyn and who she is. I pulled The following cards for her during her intuitive reading. I imagined she asked, “What message do I need?” and shuffled the cards.

I pulled the following:

Three of Swords. Keywords: Heartbreak, grief, love triangles, rejection,

separation

Knight of Pentacles: reversed. Keywords: Boredom, stagnation, perfectionism, resistance to change

Knight of Wands. Keywords: Adventure, passion, charm, ambition, fearlessness, action

the three of swords depicts three rain clouds with pouring rain in the background with a classic red heard in the foreground with three swords stabbing through
Three of Swords

the Knight of Wands sits atop a horse with its two legs high, appearing to look excitable. The knight is adorned with armor, a helmet with red plumage, bright yellow garments that sit over the amor with black flourishes. He carries a wand in his left hand, while holding the reigns in the right. The background has a blue sky and a desert with three pyramids.
Knight of Wands
the knight of pentacles sits upon a stoic, focused black horse with a red bridle. The knight holds a single pentacle up above the horse's head. The background is bright yellow, with a hilly background with sparse vegetation
Knight of Pentacles

The first card, the Three of Swords, indicates you’re experiencing/or have experienced long periods of pain and heartbreak. Have you gone through a break-up or experienced a love triangle? I think it’s important to consider what you’ve learned from this. This card asks you to accept the loss, release the pain, learn, and move forward.

The second card, the Knight of Pentacles, came out reversed, which tells me you’ve been stuck and unable to move forward from whatever this may be. Knights represent action and a fighting spirit. You might be spinning your wheels here–the heartbreak and pain likely are paralyzing you in your current cycle. You can move but not out of what’s been repeating in your world, which is unstable.

But it’s not all bad. Stagnation doesn’t last if you don’t let it. The Knight of Wands (there’s that fighting spirit again) gets shit done, usually with passion. The changes you’re about to make or have made will feel like an adventure, even if the world doesn’t see it that way.

Spirit, what message does Evelyn need to leave with today?

The Tower is a tall, light beige tower with three burning windows, the top is blown apart after being struck by lightning. Rain is coming down as angry waves crash against the tower as two people fall to the earth. The background is dark black with clouds and rain.
The Tower

The High Priestess is a woman sitting on a throne with a stoic face. She sits between a black pillar with the letter B and a white pillar with the letter J. In the middle is tapestry with halved pomegranates. Her shrouds are blue. A cross hangs from her neck with a torah in her hands. A gold crescent moon sits at her feet.
The High Priestess

The Tower. Keywords: Sudden change, release, upheaval, disaster, revelation

High Priestess: reversed. Keywords: Out of touch, repressed intuition, loss of self, superficiality, hidden motives

The Tower is intimidating, but Spirit’s message is that your world will experience an earthquake of change. You will not return to your previous life despite this being out of your hands. Often, significant changes feel like a disaster. Embrace this revelation The High Priestess is on your side. She’s reversed, suggesting this situation has robbed you of your sense of self and intuition. Take this time to get to know who you are during a time of rest before making any other major life choices.

I hope these messages were what you needed today. Thank you for trusting me with your reading!
